Vogue China - March 2008

"THIS COLLECTION WAS DESIGNED IN THE 70'S FROM REAL PARACHUTES. THE STYLES RANGE FROM JUMPSUITS, PANTS, JACKETS, SWIMSUITS, SACK BAGS AND SKIRTS. TIMELESS STYLES AND UNIQUE DESIGN ALL CONTRIBUTE TO THE FACT THAT THIS CATEGORY IS STILL PART OF THE NORMA KAMALI COLLECTION. NEW STYLES ARE ADDED EACH SEASON, LIKE CAMOUFLAGE PRINT , AND THE COLORS AVAILABLE IN THE NYLON PARACHUTES ARE WHITE FOR LANDING IN SNOW, BEIGE FOR LANDING IN THE DESERT , DARK GREEN FOR THE JUNGLE, AND BRIGHT ORANGE FOR 'SOS HELP!' THE FABRIC IS RIPSTOP NYLON AND THE CORDS ARE USED TO ADJUST LENGTH IN THE PARACHUTE STYLES."

  4. These photos are luscious; the garments look as light as air. The garments make me think of conceptual art. I'd love to be playing with those cords!

  5. Parachutes turned into Couture clothes, it's an amazing work! The 1st picture is so poetic and beautiful. It makes me think of an Alexander McQueen gown.

  10. I did a collection in parachutes as well (2005). We hand dyed them first. They're very difficult to work with but are heavenly to wear. We layered the pieces, which looked really cool as the dye took differently to each lot.

  11. you know, at first glance this seems like an absurd idea, but it's really quite good. the pieces are so frothy, they are almost diametrically opposed to their own utilitarian beginnings. lovely.

  14. norma kamali has had so many genius ideas...I never knew she did a parachute look. its almost as stellar as the sleeping bag coat. she is avante-garde and functional at the same time. its hard to find designers who think and construct like that.
