Alexander McQueen FW 1998

Alexander McQueen FW 1998
Alexander McQueen FW 1998, entitled: "Joan"

As you may have noticed, I've been on an Alexander McQueen kick lately--rediscovering that yes in fact he is one of my favorite designers of all time. I used to get up at 6 am on Saturdays to watch Fashion File with Tim Blanks because Alexander McQueen kept me dreaming. No stupid skull scarves, no settling just for a name sewn in the label...it should stop my heart the instant I see it. It has been a childish radical notion of mine to be wed in an Alexander McQueen dress.

  1. That is just a fantastic piece of clothing! I love the way you've styled it on the mannequin, with the floaty white skirt underneath.

  3. That's yours? Really? It's stunning--and you SHOULD indulge that urge and get married in it (if you choose to marry, of course). McQueen was the visionary of our time--I miss him.

  4. so this is your secret radical notion piece for 2011! (or just one of them??)
i see how the dress has been reinterpreted for real life...buttons are diagonal; i like it better than the runway version, actually.
so...will you be wearing this in a post soon?? or saving for a wedding dress?
-h, it is an amazing piece! i have always loved that color.

  6. Beautiful dress. If I remember correctly, didn't he spend a fair amount of time at Savile Row? The tailoring of McQueen has always amazed me. His stuff is quite rare on eBay now, I guess people are holding on to their McQueen originals - I know I am!

I for one would like to walk down the aisle in Rick Owens.

  7. I would LOVE to see that on you! Love how you added the white skirt beneath - beautiful touch of Victoriana!

I feel this way about things from Dries Van Noten, but I have yet to find my heart-stopping piece. Someday! I admire your patience and dedication to tracking down your dream pieces - it's inspiring.

And I think this dress would look beautiful for a wedding.

  8. Thanks everyone for your comments. :)

Nanne: I love the way McQueen combines structure and tailoring with frothy whites.

Style Odyssey: It’s one of the pieces I’ve crossed off the list. It will be awhile before its debut on me, as it requires alterations. I’m not upset about it because it is THE Alexander McQueen piece. It’s easier for me to photograph on the mannequin. It's shown on the runway (right) in black sequins (hard to see), but done in the color of the dress on the left.

Miss Sophie: Iris Apfel has corrupted my mind. I want my own museum exhibit ;P

Koko: Yes McQueen was trained on Saville Row. There is a jacket from McQueen’s famous spraying robots collection on ebay, I’d consider it but it would require too much alteration to fit me. I wouldn’t mind to be married in one of Olivier Theyskens for Rochas Victorian dresses either. Maybe I need several weddings or multiple outfit changes. lol!

Lin: I get lucky sometimes, I think about it, and it appears.

  9. I have one Alexander McQueen dress from Spring 2007 bought at 80% off - I'm sure in 15 years or so pieces designed when he was doing the designing will be collectors items and worth quite a bit - and should it ever occur to me to get married one day, I too would LOVE to get married in a McQueen. Fabulous dress!

  11. wow that dress is breathtaking! this is a weird thought, but it seems like the type of dress you see on the runway, but that no one ever actually owns. i really love the way you've styled it here with the white underneath.

  13. joelle: I can see how for many people it would be a show piece--for me it's quite practical.

  14. I don't own any "real" designerpiece, but when you write that "Iris Apfel corropted my mind" I began to think that maybe I should save some money and buy something from my favourite, John Galliano.

  16. That is absolutely amazing! His collections are truly amazing. If you love Alexander McQueen, I recommend the book, "Genius of a Generation". It is really an incredible portrait of his life.
