White Blazer

White Blazer
The white blazer is a constant item on my ever revolving wish-list. I've had some before: one (brand new) ruined by a bad tailor and sold off another I wasn't in love with. I had a white pant suit in high school, it was from junior brand: XOXO, but in my mind I was wearing Dolce & Gabbana--it made me that happy. With all the white suits and blazers appearing in the Resort and Spring/Summer collections, with the “trickle down” effect, I’m hopeful I will find THE WHITE BLAZER within the next year or so. Ideally, this is what I’m looking for:

• TRUE “BLUE” WHITE. This color is slightly less impossible to find in the spring/summer collections. By fall, white turns into the warmer yellow-tinged ivory hues.

• STRUCTURE/TAILORED FIT. Baggy blazers = Miami Vice. This is NOT a good thing, just to be clear.

• BUTTON CUFFS. Button-less cuffs just don’t look right to me. I wouldn’t want the buttons to stand out either (ie: brown or gold), though buttons can always be changed. That said in lieu of buttons I’m not opposed to a SLIT CUFF.

• NOT TOO LONG—lab coat—but NOT TOO SHORT either.

• IDEALLY SEEN IN PERSON. White can look cheap and be difficult to maintain in certain fabrics.

• OPEN TO ALTERATIONS. However, the higher the cost of the jacket, the less willing I am.

• CLASSIC YET INTERESTING. I'll need the basics: long sleeves and pockets but want something more distinctive than your standard single breast. My “perfect” white blazer is the DB from Dior Homme Spring 2005 (right). Though, I’m open to shawl collar, chain closure, etc… but not distinctively trendy aspects like extreme pagoda shoulders or studded lapels. Classic doesn't mean boring, remember I rank a basic black trench and a pleated Issey Miyake skirt as classic pieces. So despite my guidelines, I really won’t know it until I see it.

  1. Love a gorgeous white blazer, and wish you all the luck in finding THE one to add to your wardrobe ;) I often like Helmut Lang or Martin Margiela's cuts, long & lean, and usually classic with a twist.

  2. PS. Stella McCartney cuts a mean blazer too!

  3. I'd adore a new white/ivory blazer. Mine is, alas, showing its age through coloration. They are mighty difficult to get right, so I wish you luck. Still--given the lookbooks I've been seeing, this indeed seems the year for finding it!

  5. i love that one on the right...the cut, the buttons...
your perfect white blazer is out there somewhere. :)
isn't it funny how the basics- classic but updated cut, with subtle details and high quality workmanship- can be so difficult to find? that's becoming my experience, as i hunt for the "classics".

  6. I've owned a few white jackets, but would love a sharp white blazer instead. Something to look out for in the spring/summer sale season!

Thanks for the tip on Vagabond for HL; they do show up on my searches but I find them pricey overall for what they are selling. I've found better items for way cheaper. They do have a great selection, though, and not just HL.

  7. I am currently on the look out for the perfect white blazer. Would love a tuxedo style one that is very fitted and nips at the waist ala Zac Posen but it's always so hard to find something when you're dead set on getting it a certain way!

  8. I think buying any jacket without seeing it in person is tricky, let alone a white one. A slit cuff sounds gorgeous, though I have only ever seen that in pictures. Will you put on a white trouser suit again some day? I've been seeing pictures of them all over and loving it.

And every trouser suit I ever admired in magazines in the past seemed to be from Dolce and Gabbana - I've always had this idea they do great tailored things.

  9. lin: I'd love to wear a white suit again, when I was younger a white Dolce & Gabbana suit was a "wholly" grail. Dolce (and classic Dolce still is) a HUGE influence on me.

  11. god, the white blazer. that's been on my wishlist for years too after seeing a gorgeous girl wearing one in school (turns out hers was from H&M!). club monaco makes some well-tailored and affordable versions, and i'm also curious to see what my fave NY label Rag & Bone has in store for s/s 2011. keep us posted on your search! :)

by the way, i wasn't able to see your leopard trench that you emailed me about. did you try to send an image via the Kontactr? somehow it looks like the message or attachment got cut off...

as a lesser (can't think of the right word) option to check out? could be your knockabout white blazer when the other is at the cleaners :).
that's if it's even going to be stocked in the US.
quite a few weeks out, but sometimes h&m hits the mark.

  16. I've been also looking for "the perfect one".When I find nice tailoring and price, the fabric is usually a crap and opposite.
It's like with white shirts, plenty of them on the market, but still difficult to find the one that meets all the criteria:)
