Ten Essentials

"CLASSIC EVERYDAY BASICS ARE THE BUILDING BLOCKS OF STYLE UPON WHICH YOU CAN ALWAYS RELY TO MAKE YOU LOOK AND FEEL GOOD IN A SEASON OF TRICKY TRENDS. THEY ALSO PROVIDE THE IDEAL CANVAS FOR DEVELOPING YOUR STYLE--ADD A WOW NECKLACE HERE, A STRIKING STILETTO THERE FOR EASY CHIC...THE MESSAGE IS CLEAR: FABULOUS STATEMENT PIECES DEMAND TO BE WORN WITH THE MOST LUXURIOUS OF BASICS." - BECCY CLARE FOR NET-A-PORTER.COM

My Ten Essentials:
1. trench coat
2. black blazer (pref. tuxedo)
3. black crew neck tee
4. black trousers
5. black boots
6. long sweaters
7. slim jeans
8. maxi dresses / exotic prints
9. watch (pref. chrono/sporty)
10. sunglasses

My core essentials, even if they are not traditional interpretations, all boil down to basic styles. I agree with NAP that it's harder to make statement pieces work without a foundation of basics to build upon. I'm keeping it neat with 10 even though a ring and matchy-matchy bag are important too. However, I can leave the house without either and be okay, but without a watch and sunglasses I go nuts.

What are your 10?

  1. Gorgeous selection! I love the tuxedo jacket item. In fact, whenever I think of it, I think of you--you and the tuxedo jacket are permanently linked together in my mind!

  2. I wonder why it's taken me so long to discover your blog! I love the whole idea of this post ... it's something that I've been thinking about myself. Your list of "basics" is so distinctive ... what a gorgeous canvas to work with. I see that in some categories, there are multiples (like multiple blazers) ... I think that makes the concept more workable for me. I'm still trying to think about what my 10 would be ...

  3. Great list of essentials! I think my 10 would have to be:

    1) Slim black jeans
    2) Classic dark blue jeans
    3) Navy blazer
    4) The perfect LDD (Little Dark Dress, not necessarily black. I love midnight blue)
    5) A versatile day-to-night dress
    6) A gorgeus but simple silk blouse
    7) A flowy knee-length skirt
    8) Ballet flats
    9) A Chanel-style jacket or cardigan
    10)A perfect white tee

These are the essentials my wardrobe are actually missing as of now after clearing my closet of old and worn out clothes. The essentials I do have are a classic beige trench, black heeled ankle boots, beige suede bottines, everyday bag and shades/sunglasses.

  5. Ah yes, I'm a big fan of "luxurious basics." Here are my 10 essentials, which I define as things I can't imagine my wardrobe without!

    1. White cotton button-down shirt
    2. Leather skinny pants
    3. Taupe suede ankle boots
    4. Tailored black wool winter coat
    5. Tailored black blazer

    7. Men's watch

  8. i like this post. your 10 list shows how individualized our lists can be. :)
    mine:
    1. little black sheath dress
    2. black or dark slim/skinny jeans
    3. black lightweight wool trousers
    4. black flats
    5. black boots
    6. black wool blazer
    7. black turtleneck sweaters
    8. black pumps

  9. Great selection, I am developing my own list at the moment and actually planning a post about it. Definitely blue skinny jeans, a white low cut t-shirt, a beige trench coat. I live in a country with four seasons so I need quite a lot of items to get me through the winter and the summer.
For shoes I would say a pair of loafers or ballerina pumps, boots for the winter and a pair of black heels.

So my list needs defining, I don't always know what I want but there is no rush with these items because I want them to be perfect :)

  10. 1. Button down shirt (white and with blue stripes)
    2. Dark pencil skirt (preferably navy)
    3. Tailored dark blazer (preferably navy, too)
    4. Black pants
    5. Black boots
    6. Tailored winter coat
    7. LBD
    8. Neutral cardigans
    9. Sunglasses
    10. Men's watch

I guess it's pretty much the same but I guess that's why they're basics. ;) Actually, I just bought 10., so finally all my basics are covered! :)

  11. great post - the top ten foundational pieces are somewhat of a cliche, but it really is true and essential for a working wardrobe that you don't have to think too much about. some of my picks are pretty similar to yours, but i think i'm going to just have to do my own post :) it's such a simple idea, yet it does take a lot of time to build and acquire these items!

how long did it take you to build your top essentials?

  12. Very precise and cool list, and there's distinct sense of your style even though we're talking about basics.

    Mine:
    - white t shirt
    - white shirt
    - slim blue jeans
    - ballet flats
    - blazer (navy or grey)
    - denim shorts
    - chuck taylors
    - flip flops
    - cardigan (black or grey)
    - watch

(Plus, I'd like a big bag although I guess I can make do with pockets, if necessary - what a contradiction :))

  14. Miss Sophie: True it takes time to learn what one’s essentials are. It’s hard to pinpoint an exact time frame. I bought a black pant suit when I graduated high school which I still regularly wear. Different versions of my essentials have come and gone through the years. I would say I consciously embarked on my “style journey” in 2005-2006 and as a broke college student at that. By the time I had an internet presence (2007), I had my "style" pretty much figured out.

  15. I had always struggled to get to grips with basics and made a real effort to sort that out this last year. It made a big difference. According to your list I needn't go shopping! I don't wear a watch or sunnies through (sun? what sun?) so I'd swap those two for a black leather biker jacket and black leggings.

  16. Great list. My is very similar. I live in my skinny jeans, ballet flats and wouldn't leave my house without my Michael Kors watch. Thank you for sharing. :)

  17. Oh, I agree! Getting dressed is less of a daily struggle since I own those great basic items I can throw on and just feel right.

Well made jackets/coats and boots really made a big difference in the way I dress.

    My top ten:
    - structured/loose coat
    - jacket
    - trenchcoat
    - loose shirt
    - v-neck knit
    - slim trousers
    - boots
    - shoulder bag
    - scarf
    - double strap watch

  18. late, but i want to be part of the fun anyway:

    1. crew neck t-shirts
    2. cardigans
    3. long sweaters
    4. ankle boots
    5. slim jean
    6. button down shirts
    7. cross body leather bag
    8. large watch (don't like dainty)
    9. 1 versatile dress pant
    10.well-fitted blazer

i think these foundation basics definitely help me make sense of what used to be utter chaos in my closet.
