Women of Style: Lena of Broken Embraces

Broken Embraces
A reference to Severine of Belle de Jour.

Broken Embraces
Lena's takes on an expensive look as she becomes a "kept woman." This definitely ranks on my favorite on-screen dresses of all time. This dress is that perfect mix of tacky and too-much-is-not-enough fabulous that I love. (And yes, Givenchy Fall 2008 is a personal classic for me) Here Lena wears a 1990s Chanel dress. If you look closely you can see the double Cs inside the earring.

Broken Embraces
Safe to assume she wears more Chanel throughout.

  6. so much style in this film on every surface. of course, that amazing chanel dress and I even liked a gray azzedine alaia suit she wore, as well. for me, there are so many other details in this film. those red tomatoes in the film, that francesco clemente painting on the wall, and of course that amazing cat power song werewolf....this is a film to be watched more than once.

I highly recommend you see elevator to the gallows with jeanne moreau....penelope cruz's character is very much inspired by her character in that film...gorgeous blog!

  7. Penelope Cruz is soooo beautiful and and feminine, and a talented actress as well, no wonder she's featured in so many of Almodovar's films!

  8. Ooh, this looks like a good movie, I love Penelope Cruz in Spanish movies (not as much when she's in a 'Hollywood' movie).

  13. When I saw the film, I had the exact same thought about the dress. As for Almodovar and Chanel, I remember seeing a pair of fabulous red sunglasses in "High Heels" (Tacones lejanos). Double Cs visible too, of course. :) It's fascinating to me how Chanel (which is "very French") fits into his crazily unique universe.

  15. Can I be a smarty pants, or try to be one, and say that Severin is a reference to Belle du Jour, but the Belle du Jour reference is to Leopold von Sacher-Masoch's book Venus in Furs. And then there is the Severin reference in The Velvet Underground's Venus in Furs song too. And you probably knew all that.

And your site is beautiful as always.

I have this intense feeling that I want to get rid of almost everything in my closet. And when I think that, I think of your quest to streamline your closet. Which by now you probably have mastered.

    Bye for now :)
