Behind the Seams

It’s a years long frustrating search to find black pants suitable for flats. I’ve settled out of necessity for ones that were never quite right. Through this trial and error, I’ve realized the tapered “carrot” shape with slant side pockets and slit back pockets suit me best. These would get worn a lot for work so I didn’t want anything “precious,” meaning it needs to be machine washable, not cotton (fades), and not expensive.

It all sounds fairly simple--especially amidst the popularity of “boyfriend” cuts. But pant shopping is never without its obstacles. First off, I’m sized out of American staples like Gap, Banana Republic, and J.Crew. Online shopping is a gamble. Then even if I would find the style it would either be wool, have trendy elements like pleats or a cropped/ankle length, or available in every color but black.

Back in June, I finally found success at Zara’s summer sale—well almost. The pants fit me in the waist, were machine washable, with the right pockets, but were just a simple straight leg. As any menswear style guide will tell you, a good tailor is an indispensable part to any wardrobe. I had my tailor base the measurements off a pair I already have. Now to great success, I never have to buy black pants again!

  1. Perfection! No wonder you're so pleased!

I need to go black pants shopping again--I thought the loss of some weight would make mine look even better, but no. Saggy behind. Not good. Maybe I'll just try for black jeans, despite the fading issue.

  3. I hear your pain on finding the perfect trouser to wear with flats - and I see you're wearing them - I really want a pair with the right amount in skinny in the legs like these - off to Zara...

  4. I agree with Aesthetic Alterations, these pants are perfection. They look great on you.

I hear you with the pants shopping. I have always found them impossible to shop for. I did the same thing you did. When I finally found a pair that fit I had them tailored to perfection. I then had my tailor copy them. I no longer have to shop for pants which is such a relief.

  6. Oh wow, those really are perfect. Pant perfection! I have never had anything tailored before, but I'm starting to think I might have to. Who fits perfectly into anything off the rack, anyway?

  7. So true, I guess that's the reason I don't wear pants, I just simply can't find a pair that'd fit me. And I also agree that you look perfect! Absolutely perfect!

  8. whoa....they are perfect! i rather wish there was a zara here. i know it can be hit or miss- you seem to find the good stuff.

i still miss my tailor in the british virgin islands. she did exactly what i wanted, didn't overcharge for her services, and she altered each piece to my body, as if the garment was made exactly for me. and her workmanship- outstanding. i had several pairs of pants made into slim or skinny legs. since then, i've yet to find "my" tailor.

hang on to your tailor- you've struck gold. :)

I also want this fabric! So what's the fabric content of the Zara's pants?

    They look great.

  11. Lindsay K: Even though tailoring adds an additional expense, it’s well worth it instead of cycling through “almosts.” I wish I had access to better fabric stores. I would consider doing this for the white linen harem pants I can’t find.

Style odyssey: A good tailor is hard to find! I had an amazing one back in Miami too. The best way is through word of mouth.

  13. First, your whole outfit is spot on great. Love the purple accents.

I can only agree with you as I've been dealing with the same ordeal.I like a bit of heels but I wish I could wear flats with my trousers and you're right it's incredibly hard to find.

For now, I'm wearing flats and cropped trousers but I'm still on the look-out for "real" trousers.

  14. I wish all designers would be more consistent with sizing. It would make online shopping so much easier and less risky. Balenciaga and Theory are pretty good at it, but even then there are inconsistencies when it comes to different fabrics.

I've been using the same laundry detergent since college. It used to be called Cheer with colorguard, now they call it Cheer for Darks. All my jeans and black pants have resisted fading over the years.

  16. This is so spot on the most gorgeous look. It's exactly my taste, and I love the hint of purple peeking through in your shirt, Pret.

I wish other people could see your gorgeous face: I happen to know how great this must look with you: top to toe. And while you wanted to wear them with flats, I like how they work with a bit of heel, too. xoxo

  18. koko: Thanks for the tip. I've been using woolite for darks, but I will check into Cheers.

joelle: I had the zara pair altered.

  19. I like the tapered look as well, and the fit of yours is perfect. I've been searching for the perfect pair of black pants to wear for interviews, and I was actually planning on making a trip to Zara this weekend. Nice to know that they carry a good selection.
