Dolce & Gabbana circa 2001 & 2003

If you were to ask me prior to 2005 who my favorite designers were, Dolce & Gabbana were at the top of the list. From a young age, I identified with the elegance and masculine/feminine appeal of their hallmark pant suit. Not to mention my favorite celebrities at the time like Madonna, Victoria Beckham, and Angelina Jolie wore their clothes.

Their Spring 2001 and 2003 shows are the most memorable to me. Their "Gisele era" was Dolce & Gabbana at their best. I’ve long since lost my enthusiasm for the duo, but their classic archetypes will always be a part of my style DNA.

  1. I remember when I was younger, I would never think of Dolce and Gabbana (or Versace actually) as a favourite designer but my favourite editorials usually contained their clothes. Their tailoring - coats, jackets, day dresses - had a very distinct look but it's also classic in its own way. I still remember the suits with leopard lining.

  6. I can also see Sex and the City when I look at this collection! It brings back memories of when some of those styles filtered down to high street stores, now I know where they originated!

  7. I agree about the love for D&G suits, and I love that kind of 90s vibe going on in these collections: masculine clothes cut in a deliciously feminine way. To be honest, I think I'm going to be more of a suit girl than a skirt girl when I really start working in the office. I like masculine suits better than dresses. It's just so unusual and sleek. Haha, I remember I wanted to wear a tuxedo to my high school prom!

  8. These were great seasons for DG, I even remember the campaigns that came with these collections with Giselle looking beautiful with her long flowy hair. Is that Giovanna in the white tuxedo look?

  10. I have a few random runway shots tucked away in my head - usually it's one look from a show, and there's no practical reason why that look gets stuck in my head. For example, Stella Tennant walking for Helmut Lang or Anjelica Huston walking for Halston, and of course Kate Moss walking for CK. Gisele walking for D&G is definitely one too.

  11. I agree, the looks you showed of pre 2005 D&G are inspiring, they knew how to use archetypes without making things into caricatures. Hopefully this latest era is just a phase and they'll return to it.
