Fashion Resolutions for 2013

Guy Bourdin Charles Jourdan advertisement
Inspired by this TPF thread, here my Fashion Resolutions for 2013:

  • Buy Less and Spend Less On Clothing.
I’m pretty set as far as work wear goes and I know I have enough clothes that when shopping I think: that's nice I have one (or 57389) just like it...

  • Focus on Jewelry Instead.
I’ve calculated how much I need to set aside a week in order to buy a piece from my "first love." I may as well acquire these things while I’m still in my 20s before they’re unattainable in my 30s.

  • Shop For and Maintain a Wardrobe that is Suitable for Me.
That means remove the crazy shoulder pads that prevent me from wearing my velvet YSL jacket, cull as needed, be quick to return things that don’t work out, and avoid impractical purchases. My most satisfying purchases are ones that are amazingly useful (fashion and otherwise).

Are you making any fashion resolutions for 2013?

  1. I think I'll be buying more of similar looking things because I'm getting rather lazy to put an effort to what I wear. For instance, penny loafers in slight variations one in navy suede, one in navy calfskin, one similar-looking one with tassels... another without tassels! That sort of thing! haha

    1. I'm getting lazy too. Most of my shoes are the same/similar just in different colors. I could use a pair of navy driving shoes.

  2. My resolutions are pretty similar..I am inspired by #2 because my quest is to do better with budgeting this year, and working out the cost of things is a big part of it.

    1. I'm usually vague about budgeting, I haven't been this specific before.

  3. Great resolutions—especially the jewelry one. With the price increases that luxury brands are doing every year, things are quickly shooting out of reach.

You know about the shopping ban for 2013, though there are necessities needed (like white tanks). I'm still thinking about resolutions, but definitely dealing with tight/dry skin is one of them.

    1. My thoughts exactly regarding the price increases!

  4. I don't make resolutions but I do have an ongoing list of purchases to make. Whatever I didn't add last year will be (hopefully) added this year. Footwear is a big focus. As you know, it's often hard to find my shoe size; additionally, I don't like to pay full price so... those are my challenges.

Remove those shoulder pads, pronto! Once you repair/customize/alter a garment, you get more wear from it. Remember my off-white Ann D sandal boots? Once I had them dyed black, I began wearing them more often.

  5. Hmmm still thinking about it...not really great on resolutions myself.
Quite a few people I follow now have made a spend less/consume less/even total shopping ban resolution and you have all given me much food for thought. I like that yours is spend less (and presumably make better purchases in the form of jewellery) and not just spend nothing - because I'm not hard core enough to cope with the latter!
Very curious to see the YSL jacket transformed - you should do a before and after!

    1. I couldn't go cold turkey either. it's just I have enough clothes, that I can move onto the next level.

  6. It's been ages and ages since I stopped by and left a comment on your blog. Gisela and I had the resolution to get back into heights of fashion and be consistent with it. We are very excited and want to thank you for all your support throughout these years! One of my main resolutions for this year is to use declutter my life--from clothes, to stuff around the house, to cleaning out my emails, to just living a more clean, and peaceful life. I would also love to acquire some important accessories pieces that would complete the look, but also trying to save money and be a little more frugal with my expenses. So we shall see what happens, but I truly wish you a joyful and successful 2013...I feel like it will be the best year for us all!

    xoxo

  7. My resolution is pretty basic. I'm still building my essentials so my goal is to not get distracted by cheaper alternatives and instead save up to buy the things I really love. I'm impressed that you've already done the math! I think I need to get more methodical about it so I can do some calculations myself.

  8. hear hear. especially love #2 and #3, there are a few items i need to take to my tailor for tweaks...it's remarkable how a few details here and there can make the difference between a hardly-worn and a wardrobe workhorse!

curious what jewerly/investment pieces you're wishlisting!

    1. Baccarat is my second love. This year I'm specifically saving up for the other red box, but there are some Bulgari even Tiffany (the horror!) pieces that I'm keeping in mind for future years.

  9. I like your resolutions! I think my main style resolution is to find pieces and figure out work appropriate summer outfits. Looks that I won't sweat terribly in while riding the subway, yet if I need I can add a layer to when I get into offices. I normally live in shorts and men's button-downs/t-shirts during the summer- which was fine when I was a nanny/au pair or when I worked at the café. I'm not a huge fan or skirts or dresses, personally and my closet is mainly autumn/winter items... so it's a bit of an issue! ha.

  10. i second everything you said! have i worn that fascinating maxi margiela jacket with the extreme shoulders more than once? nope! it's in the archives now :-( i've cut back immensely and its been quite challenging but worth it.
btw, glad to be back on your site, always loved it...please come visit us, maury and I just relaunched :-) we'll def. be back for more

  11. Would love to hear specifically what in the little red box you're saving up for. Your resolutions sound great. I'm pretty content at the moment with my wardrobe and jewelry collection. So, I'm just looking to stay the course and appreciate what I have.

  13. Ah I didn't realize we had such similar post titles! That thread on tPF is great too, can't believe I am just finding it.

Jewelry is always wonderful to splurge on and in the past few years they have been the purchases I've regretted least. Looking forward to seeing what beautiful items you add in 2013 :)

  14. My main resolution is to stop impulsive unnecessary purchases and to stop spending so much money on clothes and accessories.
