Closet Organization

Inspired by Aesthetic Alterations post on Closet Organization, I put on some Kardashians and got to work organizing The Abyss. This one is for you AA! :) Despite having a walk-in closet and a dresser outside of the closet, I'm pretty lazy about putting things back where they belong. This neatness won't last.

Closet 1 Pt
Closet 2 Pt

I'm a throw on and go kind of person and my method to the madness reflects that. My closet is split into For Work (1st picture) and Not For Work (2nd picture, left). I don't like searching my whole closet for what to wear to work. (There's another post about my strategy for dressing for work here). From there the clothes are grouped together by category (jackets with jackets, pants with pants, etc..) and then from light to dark. Whatever is inside a drawer, gets shoved in there (I don't fold ever). I have a garment steamer (I highly recommend one), so I touch out the wrinkles before I go. Anything that needs an actual iron has no place in my life. I have a year round wardrobe, but leather and velvets do get tucked away out of season.

I didn't take any before pictures, but I made some changes. I removed a hanging organizer. It really was unneccessary when my closet was redone, and it was just a magnet for clutter. Some of the "winter" and once-in-a-blue-moon clothes that were once hapzardly shoved into the hanging organizer are now neatly housed on a top shelf. Convenient if I want them, but also out of the way. The pretty boxes and shopping bags hide those random odds and ends. My luggage is on the top shelf, and I hide bedding in there. The little blue box above the drawers now houses shoe insoles. Now that they have a place, hopefully I won't have to search all over for their mates. Bags within bags, especially the large bags that would slouch otherwise. But I'm lax about my bags, I switch them out a lot so they don't get back in their dust bags asap. (I tend to have 2 bags "in use" living outside of the closet.) I hung one of those canvas shopper bags and keep some extra dust bags and other shopper bags in there--idea borrowed from AA. I really could use a full-length mirror inside my closet (on the door), because it’s annoying having to go in/out of the closet for a mirror.

As jewelry and sunglasses are last on/first off, they live on top of the dresser outside of the closet. Necklaces and bracelets are inside the croco jewelry box (Zara Home); rings and earrings are inside the little brown box. The watches end up either in the tray or in the croco box. Bacc and Bvl live in their own boxes on top of the dresser. Scarves and house clothes take up two of the drawers.

...And that's my closet! Not glamorous, but it gets the job done. How do you organize yours? Or better yet if you have a closet organization post of your own, just link it in the comments.

  1. I crave a well organized closet. For me, it's the only way. Mine is fairly streamlined but starting to be a bit cramped, as I share it with "J" and he's not so organized. Yours is superb!

  2. That's an amazing closet!

I keep things organised with two small closets. One in my bedroom, for things I wear regularly, and the second in the spare room, for things I wear on rare occasion or aren't really my style anymore (and should probably be given away, now that I think about it).

  3. I am in LOVE with your closet. In love. All the work to renovate and build that room was so worth it. All. That. Room. I'd shop all the time! That line of jackets and cardigans gets two thumbs up from me! You make them look so luxurious.

That croco jewelry box is really lovely. I've not thought about Zara and H&M for that sort of item—I see some window shopping coming up for that. We have some design stores in the city I've always wanted to visit, where maybe such a pretty friend can be found.

Thank you for these photos. Your closet is DREAMY.

    1. thank you, your post was the kick in the pants I needed. Wouldn't surprise me if nyc had it's own zara home, but otherwise the croco box is still available online. Zgallerie also tends to carry similar things too.

  4. wow, so organized and well put together. I have two closets, I must admit one of the negative parts about owning so much black attire is that it is sometimes hard to find everything. I wonder if people who like to wear black feel the same? p.s. you inspire me to organize my closet better! :)

  5. great post! love seeing and learning how you and AA organized your closets. you have such a neat and spare aesthetic, it feels like a boutique... ps I love the bears hanging out on the top shelf. :) (i've normally got a small hedgehog closet mascot in mine.)

  6. You know, I organize in sections. I have a pretty weird organization system. I separate work appropriate clothes from non-work appropriate clothes, sweaters/cardigans from tanks/tees from shirts/blouses same for jeans, shorts, and pants. I'm a bit OCD, I think, but makes it easy to know what to grab on a weekday!

  7. Fairly jealous of your ample and organised wardrobe space! It's always enjoyable seeing other people's wardrobes. I currently have random IKEA solutions to make up for my lack of wardrobe space, so seeing this is like a dream!

  10. I could fit two of my closets into yours! Especially jealous of your shoe storage. While I can do any renovations on my closet, I've managed to arrange things so that I have all of my clothes from all seasons out in the open - no more storage under my bed or in the coat closet. I was just tired of switching out my wardrobe twice a year when the seasons change.

P.S. Re: Kim Kardashian. I really like her Kanye-era style, is that bad?? The outfit you showed me gave me an outfit idea actually, lol. Alas I could do a year's worth of squats and still not have a bum like hers though.
