Inspired by Aesthetic Alterations post on Closet Organization, I put on some Kardashians and got to work organizing The Abyss. This one is for you AA! :) Despite having a walk-in closet and a dresser outside of the closet, I'm pretty lazy about putting things back where they belong. This neatness won't last.
I'm a throw on and go kind of person and my method to the madness reflects that. My closet is split into For Work (1st picture) and Not For Work (2nd picture, left). I don't like searching my whole closet for what to wear to work. (There's another post about my strategy for dressing for work here). From there the clothes are grouped together by category (jackets with jackets, pants with pants, etc..) and then from light to dark. Whatever is inside a drawer, gets shoved in there (I don't fold ever). I have a garment steamer (I highly recommend one), so I touch out the wrinkles before I go. Anything that needs an actual iron has no place in my life. I have a year round wardrobe, but leather and velvets do get tucked away out of season.
I didn't take any before pictures, but I made some changes. I removed a hanging organizer. It really was unneccessary when my closet was redone, and it was just a magnet for clutter. Some of the "winter" and once-in-a-blue-moon clothes that were once hapzardly shoved into the hanging organizer are now neatly housed on a top shelf. Convenient if I want them, but also out of the way. The pretty boxes and shopping bags hide those random odds and ends. My luggage is on the top shelf, and I hide bedding in there. The little blue box above the drawers now houses shoe insoles. Now that they have a place, hopefully I won't have to search all over for their mates. Bags within bags, especially the large bags that would slouch otherwise. But I'm lax about my bags, I switch them out a lot so they don't get back in their dust bags asap. (I tend to have 2 bags "in use" living outside of the closet.) I hung one of those canvas shopper bags and keep some extra dust bags and other shopper bags in there--idea borrowed from AA. I really could use a full-length mirror inside my closet (on the door), because it’s annoying having to go in/out of the closet for a mirror.
...And that's my closet! Not glamorous, but it gets the job done. How do you organize yours? Or better yet if you have a closet organization post of your own, just link it in the comments.
