Modifying a Rick Owens Dress

RO abito gown c21
Fantasy

RO dress alterations
Helmut Lang knit jacket; Rick Owens Lilies dress; Baccarat ring; BCBGeneration shoes

Reality
As RO hems run excessively long, I had my seamstress use the excess to add a panel to cover the neckline, with a small slit in the back of the neck to get in and out. Believe me, I prefer the original but it is just not applicable to my life. By some fluke of luck, this dress was at a price too good to pass up, so I made it work! This case was a relatively minor alteration, in the past I have completely changed sizes and silhouettes. I find I am happier with the results of alterations when I know exactly what needs to be done.

Have you ever modified a design to better suit you?

  1. I have! Mostly with jeans and hem lengths. This looks lovely the way you've altered it.

Also, I found the shorter version of this dress at a Crossroads (!!!) about a week ago! The price was also too good to pass up.

  2. I really love that you've taken this 'occasion' piece, and transformed it into something for more regular use, while keeping the integrity of the design. Funny, I never thought of that as an option!

So my question is, where do you wear this outfit? Is this an everyday, 9-5 outfit for you? Or is it more of a date night/girls' night out ensemble?

    1. Thank you. I don't dress too nice to work since it's just not practical. I have a boring life so I wear it where I go. The material is jersey so it feels casual.
